Winner: ENR's Images of the Year in Construction
January 2, 2007
WCC's Resident Artist, Maryanne Caruthers, is a Winner of the ENR Photo Contest: Images of the Year in Construction for 2006.
Walsh Construction Co.’s long-time artist-in-residence captured a worker with elevator-core reinforcing steel against a gray sky at The Strand Condominiums at RiverPlace in Portland, Oregon. Caruthers, also a painter and illustrator, says this picture clicked because of the strong lines, the silhouette and the worker’s gesture.
"I began gathering photographic images for WCC on February 16, 1973. I love the work—very rare is the construction company with the vision to have an artist-in-residence. My job is not unlike a combination of fishing, hunting and gardening. The produce of my adventures I deliver to the chefs in WCC’s marketing department, where it’s combined with other ingredients and cooked up into spectacular soufflés!"
ENR (Engineering News Record) is an international construction industry publication. The Dec. 25 issue featured the winners of the Images of the Year in Construction contest: "photographs that best capture the flavor and mood of construction in 2006." Maryanne’s photo was selected from among hundreds of entries.
